Sectors

What a sector looks like in its accounts.

The median company of each sector, from the accounts its members filed with the SEC: how fast it grew, what it kept of each unit of sales, and what it earned on the capital it employs. A figure on a company page is only high or low next to these.

Medians of each company's last fiscal year. A median is the middle company, so one extreme case does not move it.

Your own portfolio, by sector

Signed in, the risk tab groups your holdings with this same classification: how much money and how much risk sits in each sector, and each company against its sector's median.

Sectors are grouped from each company's SEC industry code — our own grouping of public data, not the GICS classification. Only companies that file their accounts with the US Securities and Exchange Commission are covered: their filings are public, so they can be shown to anyone. A European share or an ETF files elsewhere, and is not here. Nothing on these pages is a recommendation to buy or sell anything.
