How it is computed here
Purchases minus sales, at the prices you recorded. Fees are included if your ledger has them. Dividends are not: money the company paid you is a return on what you invested, not more money you invested.
Worked example
- Everything paid for purchases, minus everything received from sales, across the whole ledger.
Demo portfolio: four invented companies, generated prices, measured by the real engine. Past returns do not predict future ones.
Where it misleads
This is not your cost basis for tax. It nets sales against purchases across the whole history, which is not how any tax authority computes a gain.
